In a detailed analysis, Apple Insider has speculated that Apple might be planning to use glass – probably Gorilla Glass 5 – on the back of the next iPhone. It’s some years since the company last used the material on the back of a phone – the iPhone 4s that was introduced in October 2011. Since then, Corning has developed the Gorilla Glass to be less likely to shatter as in 2011, the glass was on the first version of Gorilla Glass.
A glass back would make the phone less prone to scratching and many like the look of a glass back. There are obvious electrical advantages compared to metal although Apple Insider suggests that to reduce the concentration of heat, a graphite sheet might be used to help the spreading of the output of hot components.
