After purchasing fitness tracker firm Basis in March (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 10), Intel is preparing to deliver its first smartwatch: the Basis Peak. The name was announced at the Intel Developer Forum last week, but now the chipmaker has shared more details. The watch will have an aluminium body and a ‘low power’ monochrome LCD display protected by Gorilla Glass. The battery will last up to four days. Fitness will still be the primary focus, with an optical heart rate sensor (improved from Basis’ first smartwatch, the B1) that is supposedly powerful enough to replace a heart rate chest strap. Basis will begin selling the Peak (in Europe and the USA) in November, for $200.
