What They Say
Part of the reason that Facebook is so committed to AR is that the company feels it missed out on the creation of the current wave of hardware platforms and wants to ensure that it is around when augmented reality displays replace smartphones. Facebook thinks it has the power to develop the hardware, but needs to ensure that users trust the company with the huge amount of data it would have. Completely new interfaces will be needed with discreet control methods. Eye tracking is a critical technology as is world mapping. A huge hardware challenge will be building displays that are small, bright and powerful enough, with a wide field of view.
