A report from IHS Markit on UltraHD content and quoted by Advanced Television has suggested that UltraHD may follow from S3D because too few titles have been mastered in higher resolutions. Although the report shows 400 titles available in UHD, the report quotes that the “vast majority” have just been upscaled from FullHD. Further, over 50% have been supplied by Paramount and Sony, with Netflix the third largest provider, globally. In Blu-ray, there are just 30 or so titles. Ultraflix, a transactional VOD service in the US has 229 titles, but these are “almost all” scaled up or less well known titles.
The danger is that UHD becomes a ” little-used, high-end feature of large-screen TV sets”, as 3D has.
