Huawei unveils new foldable phone despite US crackdown

What They Say

As expected, Huawei has launched its Mate X2 foldable smartphone which has an in-folding design using panels from BOE, according to Nikkei. The 8.01″ inside screen is backed up with a 6.45″ outer display and the device is just 4.4mm thick when unfolded. It uses a Kirin 9000 5G chipset and the firm is reported to have 20 million of those in stock. The chip is also used in the Mate 40. Other sources have identified the display has having 90Hz refresh rate and a 2200 x 2480 main display (413ppi) while the external display is 1160 x 2700 (456ppi). There are four cameras including a 50mp device. The fingerprint sensor is side mounted and there’s a 4500 mAh battery.

It is not cheap, with a list price of 17,999 yuan ($2,785) and will be available soon.

Huawei’s smartphone shipments fell 42% on the year to 32.3 million units in October-December, dragging the company to fifth place globally, after Apple, Samsung and compatriots Xiaomi and Oppo.

What We Think

This looks a great device, but is not, as far as we can see, revolutionary in any way. (BR)
