What They Say
Huawei launched, as expected, a new folding, clamshell smartphone, the P50 Pocket, that combines a folding 6.9″ 120Hz 21:9 (279O x 1188) resolution. What was not expected is that the smartphone has a 1″ round cover OLED display which can be used for a range of notifications and has its own widgets. It can also be used as a viewfinder for the main camera which is under a punched hole. The design is gapless using a custom hinge.
It has three cameras, 40MP/26mm equivalent, 13MP ultrawide and 32MP ‘spectrum camera’. It is built around a Snapdragon 888 4G and the battery is a 4,000mAh unit with 40W charging.
The phone is 7.2mm when open and 15.2mm when folded and weighing 90 grams. It will sell just in China at from CNY (8GB/256GB) 8,988 ($1,410).
What We Think
The lack of 5G on a phone of this price shows the impact of the US trade sanctions and surely will make it tricky to sell. As I’ve said, my Note 9 is more than three years old now, but still performs very well. 5G is really the only feature I might need a new phone for. (BR)
