Huawei was the fourth-largest filer of patents with the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2015, the office’s annual report has revealed. The company filed 1,953 patent applications, and topped digital communications for the second year in a row (1,197 applications).
Philips, Samsung and LG led the overall patent application list, followed by Huawei, Siemens and United Technologies. Huawei ranked ahead of Ericsson and Qualcomm in digital communications.
Goergie Cruz, chief IP counsel at Huawei, said, “The European business environment is set to become fully digitised, and at Huawei, we are proud to remain the top contributor to this innovation process. Protecting intellectual property in this field is of the utmost importance, and as a natural consequence the number of newly filed European patent applications has to increase”.
