Gizmodo Spots a Strange Shaped Desktop Monitor

What They Say

Gizmodo spotted an 8.8″ diagonal ‘stretch’ desktop LCD display that has a resolution of 420 x 1920 and connects via HDMI. It is powered by USB Type-C The Elsonic EK-MD088 will be available in Japan in February 2022 at ¥14,800 ($128).

What We Think

No doubt there are space-limited applications where such a display could be really useful. While I like a big display that I can flexibly re-configure to show different applications, I have a display-experienced friend who really likes having four separate FullHD displays with particular apps always ‘in their place’ and separated by bezels.

Unlike CRT, there is no real reason why an LCD has to be a particular shape, other than the fixed cost of introducing a new size/shape.
