HTC has come to the end of eleven consecutive quarters of losses to hit a profit of NT$21.1 billion ($708 million) for Q1, following the sale of its smartphone ODM business to Google. (HTC Finalises Smartphone Staff Transfer Deal with Google). However, smartphone revenues were just NT$2.1 billion ($70.5 million) in April, the lowest in fourteen years.
The company is due to release a new smartphone in May.
Analyst Comment
This positive result is, of course, a ‘blip’ and we think it’s unlikely that the losses are over. HTC has a good brand position in VR, but it’s not in the same order of magnitude of scale as smartphones. (BR)
