HTC GM Predicts ‘Rise Of All-In-Two’ VR Devices In 2021

What They Say

In an interview with Upload VR, HTC’s Graham Wheeler forecast that while the self-contained Oculus Quest 2 is proving quite a success, headsets that are designed to work with 5G smartphones will also grow as a category. He also said that the firm has worked with Qualcomm to create its Vive Wave platform, enabling 5G smartphones to drive different XR experiences.

The company teased a new headset concept in February last year which might be powered by a smartphone (another version has a built-in processor).

What We Think

I have been surprised that ‘split’ systems have not done so well. I can see the attraction of an integrated solution for simplicity and ensuring a managed experience. However, putting the extra weight of a processor and battery on the head has always seemed to be the wrong way to do things. (BR)
