HoloLens Teams are Reorganised

What They Say

The Information’s Reality Check reports that HoloLens co-creator Alex Kipman is to depart from Microsoft after allegations of misconduct. The hardware teams will be absorbed by the “Windows + Devices” organization while the software side will be integrated into the Microsoft Teams organisation.

What We Think

It seems that the loss of Kipman is unrelated to the progress of the project, but may have been used as a chance by Microsoft to reconsider what it is doing in the XR space.

We previously reported on doubts on Microsoft’s IVAS contract with the US DOD. (Hololens IVAS System Future Still Unclear). This move must put doubt over a lot of the future of the Hololens project, although that was already being reported (Microsoft’s AR hardware Plans Said to be ‘in Disarray’). Although Microsoft was at one time said to be working with Samsung on AR (Samsung & Microsoft Collaborating on AR/MR with Hololens?), confirmed in February by ET News in Korea, although that report also said that it had its own devices as well.
