HDR On-Set Monitoring: Considerations & Best Practices

What They Say

Netflix has published a guide for its content partners on the advantages and considerations for HDR monitoring on-set, although such monitoring is not a requirement for the firm.

The firm sees advantages in spotting problems that might only be visible at the time if HDR is used, fror example in particular colours or contrast or in highlighting (sorry!) the dynamic range available. Cost is an issue as may be the time needed to ensure a good workflow. The firm sees the market for HDR monitors as still behind what the industry needs.

The article reviews the different kinds of display available (e.g. LCD, miniLED LCD and OLED) and also at the importance of colour management for predictable results. (Separately, we found this video which looks at the topic of colour management and that was released earlier this month. The video is interesting in its discussion of scene-referred and display-referred colour spaces. The video promotes the use of ACES as a way of storing content.

What We Think

There is nothing that is really new in the article, but if you are new to HDR, it seems a reasonable primer. Netflix is clearly unconvinced by what has been done so by makers of field monitors and I wonder if there is mileage in getting endorsements for particular hardware? (BR)
