What They Say
FlatPanelsHD has managed to get a chance to have an ‘exclusive’ look at the new Sony QD OLED and miniLED TVs and is impressed with the QD OLED which ‘did not disappoint’. The blog said that in a side-by-side with last years A90j OLED, the A95K is brighter with more saturated colours in HDR. However, it said, the ‘differences were subtle’ in the demo clips (and Sony is usually good at selecting clips! – editor). The writer suggested that the set might have less aggressive ‘anti-burn in’ algorithms, but this was not confirmed.
The new Sony X95K and X90K miniLED sets were also shown. The X95K is said to be closer to Samsung’s Neo QLED sets than last year’s X90j with better brightness. However the miniLED sets still had visible haloing and other artefacts. The new sets have ‘less than 1,000 zones’ although precise numbers were not revealed.
What We Think
As with demos at CES, these sets were initially demonstrated in ‘vivid’ mode. That will be how they are sold in stores, no doubt, but given the ‘subtle’ differences after calibration, the testers that most influence the TV mavens could be a bit half-hearted in their praise. On the other hand, supply of QD OLED is not going to be big for a while, so that probably won’t affect sales. As the blog pointed out, in normal viewing, the eye accommodates for the different brightness levels, anyway. (BR)
