What They Say
Two separate reports this week suggest that more smartphone handset assembly may be moving to India.
- Reuters reported analysis from JPMorgan that a quarter of Apple’s iPhone production could be in India by 2025, with 5% of iPhone 14 production moving by the end of this year. Apple has been working with Foxconn and Wistron in the region since 2017 for iPhone assembly. The report suggested that 25% of all Apple products could be made outside China by that time.
- Tne Information said that Google has been looking for quotes to make between half and one million smartphones – around 10% to 20% of the annual volume – in India. Digitimes created the table below of Pixel sales, based on IDC data.
What We Think
Given the continued problems and challenges from lockdowns, following on from the trade tensions with the US, looking to move more handset production to the world’s second largest handset market does not look crazy! (BR)
