What They Say
Sixteen-nine.net reports that Google is making another approach to the digital signage market as there is a new version of Chrome, the Chrome OS Flex, that can run on existing devices designed for Windows or Macs, rather than dedicated hardware for Chrome. The blog’s Dave Haynes believes that Google lost interest after making a splash in 2015. (we reported on that splash here Google Makes Waves With Market Entrance). He points out that some companies continued to use the OS including “notably Australia’s Stratos Media, UK-based ScreenCloud, Israel’s Novisign and Canada’s Rise Vision and Telemetry TV” among others.
Haynes identifies middleware from SignageOS of the Czech Rep. that makes it possible to run blended networks of different system-on-chip smart devices and players.
Invidis also reported on the revival.
What We Think
Google offers the OS free of charge. That might sound attractive, but OS costs are not a huge one when you look at the costs of maintenance, content creation and installation, although Linux is also popular because of the (lack of) cost. (BR)
