Google Pixel 6a Camera & Display Score Release

After undergoing both DXOMARK Camera & Display quality tests, the Google Pixel 6a demonstrated an excellent performance in camera (2nd position in DXOMARK High-End camera ranking, just behind the Google Pixel 6) enabling Google to rank its two devices in the top 2 of the segment, and a good display performance (4th position in DXOMARK High-End display ranking) allowing it to obtain both the Gold Camera and Silver Display labels.

Here is a quick recap.

CAMERA in a nutshell

With an overall Camera score of 130, the Google Pixel 6a demonstrated a very good video and camera performance for a device of this range , obtaining the DXOMARK Camera Gold label.

Though it features a slightly less sophisticated camera hardware than the Pixel 6. Despite these hardware differences, the device’s image rendering is coming very close to the impressive score of the Pixel 6. On the plus side, the Pixel 6a’s smaller sensor offers a slightly wider depth of field providing a better sharpness on background subjects: ideal for group shots with better detail on all faces. The camera also does very well for exposure, especially in low light and night scenes. Only main noticeable drawbacks are shadow noise, even in bright light, and a lower level of captured detail in all light conditions.

In video, the Pixel 6a does well too and is very close to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in terms of exposure, color, and stabilization in most tested conditions, proving excellent results considering its price segment. Plus, the Pixel 6a’s autofocus is fast and repeatable, good for shooting in outdoor and indoor conditions. On the downside, compared to the best-in-class Pixel 6, the device suffers from a strong drop of detail.

Strengths

  • Really good photo and video quality for its price
  • Nice and accurate color for photo and video
  • Good exposure and wide dynamic range in bright light and indoors
  • Effective video stabilization
Improvement points
  • Limited zoom performance
  • Lack of detail at medium range tele zoom and longer
  • Some image noise in all light conditions
  • Loss of fine detail in low light
  • Bokeh blur effect not visible in preview

DISPLAY in a nutshell

With an overall Display score of 86, the Google Pixel 6a offers a well balanced performance, with good color rendering and good readability in most tested conditions, except in very bright sunlight, where the screen is hardly readable. The Pixel 6a’s refresh rate of 60 Hz offers a less smooth experience that the Pixel 6 (90 Hz) when scrolling in the gallery and browsing the web. When gaming, its accurate touch and smooth feel make it pleasant to use even if some stutter can be noticeable.
Strengths
  • The indoor use of the device is comfortable thanks to a proper brightness
  • Touch is accurate for playing videos games
Improvement points
  • The smartphone is not readable under sunlight.
  • HDR Video performances are not satisfying in the dark, especially regarding the brightness.
