Google has made blog post that highlights that it has a new version of the Chrome OS Flex operating system designed to transform old Macs and PCs into Chromebooks. The system needs to have 4GB of RAM and an Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible chipset. The software is free.
What We Think
For those that have been following this idea for some time, the new OS is a re-brand of the CloudReady technology that Google bought at the end of 2020. As I mentioned before, during the peak of the pandemic, I had good results converting unused notebooks to Chromebooks using CloudReady for distribution to families that didn’t have enough PCs at home to give one to each child. I tried to convert desktops, but didn’t have much joy with that as they were short of peripherals such as microphones or cameras, which are needed to meet the Chromebook system
At some point, I may convert my ’emergency’ PC to the OS. When I have any problem with my PC, it seems to take me as long to get the emergency one up to date and usable as it takes to fix the PC! (I have an extended on-site warranty). (BR)
