German TV Market Well Down in Q3

What They Say

If the LCD industry is to recover, it needs some demand stimulation, but that is not going to come quickly from Germany as, according to the latest data from the GfU, the TV set market was down in Q3 by 19.7% compared to last year in unit terms and revenues dropped even further, by 24.5% to €668 million.

Revenues and the number of OLED TVs sold also declined in the third quarter of 2022, but their share of the overall TV market continued to increase compared to the same period last year. With 131,000 units, the proportion of units in this period was 13% (previous year: 11%). At €202 million, the share of sales between July and September is 30% (previous year: 27%) of total TV set sales.

TV sets with a screen size larger than 55 inches (127 cm) are also affected by the current trend, with fewer units (-26.1%) and less sales (-28.3%).

Cumulatively for the first three quarters of 2022, a similar picture emerges: between January and September 2022, almost 3.3 million televisions were sold in Germany, a drop of 17.7%. Sales amounted to almost €2.3 billion euros, a drop of 14.5%.

What We Think

The GfU is still hoping for a bit of a boost from the World Cup in Q4.  (BR)
