What They Say
Hot on the heels of IDC, Gartner issued its Q3 PC data estimates and said that the market was down 19.5% on last year, the steepest market decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s and the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline.
Gartner gave its estimates for the US as well and said that the EMEA market was down 26.4% on last year to 17 million unites.
What We Think
Well, no doubting the general trend, but I couldn’t help noticing the big difference in the estimates for Apple. While IDC had the number of units at 10.06 million and share at 13.5%, Gartner has the firm at 5.8 million and 8.5%. Both companies use similar definitions, so the estimates are just the result of different methodologies. Apple doesn’t give out the data these days (although it used to) and it’s harder to estimate when the firm has its own silicon and you can’t get guidance from chip suppliers such as Intel and AMD.
