Foxconn Develops High-Resolution MicroLED Display with Partners for Next-Gen AR Applications

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., announced a groundbreaking development in micro-display technology during Touch Taiwan 2023. In collaboration with Ennostar and Unikorn Semiconductor, the company unveiled a new 0.12-inch MicroLED display with an impressive pixel density of over 6,500 ppi (pixels per inch) and a blue light brightness of 200,000 nits.

The main objective of this partnership is to enhance MicroLED efficiency by optimizing the structure of MicroLED chips and implementing a new thin film protection technology. As a result, surface defects have been significantly reduced, while external quantum efficiency and product reliability have been improved.

Given the high brightness demands of AR applications, Unikorn Semiconductor Corporation, with its extensive experience in III-V semiconductor manufacturing and advanced process technology, was responsible for optimizing the MicroLED chip efficiency. This ensures a balance between brightness and chip power consumption during the subsequent full-color conversion. Foxconn, in turn, leveraged its proprietary color conversion technology to achieve a full-color display effect at 3,600 ppi.

Traditional high-ppi full-color displays often struggle with quantum dot optical density due to the small pixel pitch, which can lead to blue light leakage, causing blue halo and color shift among pixels. Foxconn’s MicroLED manufacturing technology, based on semiconductor processes, uses high-efficiency quantum dot color conversion and a self-developed reflective inter-pixel light shield technology. This provides sufficient quantum dot optical density to prevent color shift among pixels, generating high-purity red and green light for a full-color display effect.

Foxconn, Ennostar, and Unikorn Semiconductor have joined forces to develop blue Micro LED processes and foundry services, aiming to enhance high-efficiency blue light pixel processes with a 4um pitch. The long-term goal of the collaboration is to invest resources in applications with growth potential to achieve differentiation and technological innovation. The new Micro LED display can be widely used in smart glasses, AR/VR devices, and Foxconn plans to pursue collaboration and innovation to expand business opportunities in virtual reality, augmented reality, and other metaverse applications.
