We have been reporting on the development of VR headsets with eye tracking from Fove since 2013. Now the company is coming to market with pre-orders now available. The Fove 0 will go on sale until 9th November at $549 and will then be $599. The headset uses a single 2560 x 1440 OLED as a display (1280 x 1440 per eye) with 70Hz refresh and a Field of View of around 100º.
The big point about the Fove is that it includes 120Hz eye tracking, which the company sees as critical for this application, both for improving performance using foveated rendering (check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeR4M9Vt02Q) and also by allowing some control by eye. It can also be used to calculate and optimise depth of field.
Yuka Kojima, co-founder and CEO at FOVE said “We believe that eye-tracking capability is the next big milestone in the VR industry and we’re excited to be at the forefront of that technology.”
The headset weighs 520g and is driven by HDMI and USB.
