What They Say
DSCC has published a blog highlighting display industry revenues and shows how 2021 really was a ‘blip’ with great sales of devices and high panel prices, but with a ‘fall to earth’ in 2022 as revenues drop from $164 billion to $131 billion, a fall of 20%, in 2022. However steady growth is expected to bring revenues up to $152 billion in 2026 – still below the 2021 level.
There’s an interesting comparison of LCD vs OLED revenues. LCD did really well in 2021, but with prices falling dramatically in the commoditised LCD TV panel market, revenues have dropped right back while OLED, after just a 1% drop this year, continues to grow steadily, with OLEDs for IT expected to add to the long term growth.
In looking at the first chart, we were surprised to see the good development in automotive and DSCC pulled out the data for that segment. The business was hit by supply chain challenges in the automotive industry, but is expected to see solid growth in the next few years.
The blog article also includes a chart of area by application. DSCC expects to see a continuing rise in screen diagonals for TV applications.
What We Think
The flat LCD revenue forecast is not good news for those that were hoping to profit from machinery sales to boost LCD industry capacity. As we have reported, many of the planned developments have been shelved. (BR)
