FCC Votes to Promote Broadcast Internet via ATSC 3.0

What They Say

The FCC, the US telecoms regulator, has approved a ‘Report & Order’ that updates the rules and fee structures related to broadcast internet services including ATSC 3.0. The FCC said it will ensure that TV broadcasters can partner with third-parties to provide news services without the risk of having to pay the federal government excessive fees.

The NAB and the APTS had supported the move, but the NCTA did not, the report said.

What We Think

The huge contrast between the level of detailed regulation for tradtional broadcasting and the ‘Wild West’ of internet services is increasingly looking unsustainable. Most countries really haven’t solved the problem of how to regulate global media giants using streaming. (BR)
