Fast Charging Defines Motorola’s 2015 Phones

The Moto X and Moto G smartphones from Motorola have been greeted as solid premium and budget phones, respectively; the company is now hoping to repeat its success with the newly-announced 2015 versions. These new models forgo flashy features and focus on getting the basics right.

Two models of the Moto X were announced in late July, and one Moto G. The largest is the Moto X Style: a 5.7″ phablet with 2560 x 1440 resolution. Next is the 5.5″ Moto X Play (1920 x 1080), and finally the 5″ Moto G.

With fast-charging technology, the X Style is said to charge 50% faster than the Galaxy S6. Android 5.1.1 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 chip. There is a 21MP rear camera and a wide-angle front camera. The smartphone can also be customised with the Moto Maker tool (Motorola Goes the Custom Design Route).

Motorola has built the X Style with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage options and 3GB of RAM. It also features a 3,000mAh battery. The phone will be launched in September, starting at $400.

The X Play is a water-repellent smartphone, with the same rear camera as the X Style and a 5MP front camera. The 3,630mAh battery supports fast charging, and will last for up to two days without being plugged in. It has a Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB models. It will be launched this month, starting at £235 ($365) ex VAT.

Finally, the Moto G is IPX7-compliant, targeting the entry-level category. It has a 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera; 8GB or 16GB of storage; a microSD slot; and 2,470mAH battery. The phone runs Android on a Snapdragon 510 quad-core CPU.

Motorola has launched the Moto G; it is available now, starting at $180.
