Facebook plans to launch a mobile VR headset in 2018, according to a report on Bloomberg earlier this week.
Bloomberg didn’t name its sources, but cited “people familiar with its development”.
The product is allegedly being designed and marketed to bridge the gap between cheaper smartphone devices such as Gear VR, and high-end tech like Oculus Rift.
According to the report, the device will retail at around $200, will function without the need for tethering to a smartphone or PC and is being developed in conjunction with Chinese electronics company Xiaomi.
Xiaomi declined to comment on the rumours. However, an Oculus spokesperson provided this statement to TechCrunch shortly after the reports surfaced.
“We don’t have a product to unveil at this time, however we can confirm that we’re making several significant technology investments in the standalone VR category. This is in addition to our commitment to high-end VR products like Oculus Rift and mobile phone products like Gear VR”.
