Following recent hirings from companies including Google and Microsoft, Facebook has posted at least four additional job openings seeking embedded software, digital design and silicon prototyping and emulation engineers to help develop custom chips for AR hardware.
The posts say: “Our chips will enable AR devices where our real and virtual world will mix and match throughout the day. We believe the only way to achieve our goals is to look at the entire stack, from transistor, through architecture, to firmware and algorithms”.
A spokesperson declined to comment on the speculation, but a source close to Facebook’s chip-related endeavours surmised that the company is likely developing peripheral chips for video, display or image processing.
