Facebook Adds Subscriptions to Oculus – Google Developing Waveguides

What They Say

The Protocol blog reported that a plan to enable in-app subscription billing to the Oculus platform is a first move to allow the Oculus platform for the Quest VR headsets to move more towards a ‘metaverse’ and help to promote non-gaming apps. Launch partners include fitness and wellness services FitXR, TRIPP and VZfit, as well as DJ app TribeXR, productivity app vSpatial and the social VR hit Rec Room.

What We Think

The moves allows different models to in-app purchases or paid downloads. Although I have used ‘smart’ trainers for something like a decade for fitness, I really can’t see the attraction of exercising while wearing a headset.

The blog also reported today that Google is recruiting for a “waveguide design developer, augmented reality” as well as an R&D manager for the topic and eight engineers for waveguide R&D. (BR)
