Eyevis Prepares Transparent OLED

Eyevis has previously demonstrated transparent OLED displays in private areas at exhibitions, away from the show floor – but now these products are beginning to appear on the company’s website. One such model is the EYE-TOLED-5500, a 55″ unit with an AMOLED panel from Samsung Display.

(Left) ‘Black’ content with pixels off. (Right) Bright content with pixels on.Set to be available in Q1’16, the display has 45% transmissivity and is rated for 12-hour per day operation. Many other specifications are still to be determined, such as lifetime and operating conditions.

The display has 1920 x 1080 resolution and 150 cd/m² of brightness (full area; 500 cd/m² 1% peak brightness). It covers 100% of the NTSC gamut and shows 10-bit colour. Viewing angles are 178° and the display features a DVI-D port.

Bezels are 8mm, and the display can be tilted between 0° and 15° if installed free-standing. Horizontal and vertical installations are possible.

Eyevis will launch the display in Q1’16.

Analyst Comment

The ‘TBD’ rating on operating conditions, lifetime, etc. is interesting. It implies that tests have not been fully conducted for the display yet, which is likely the reason that Eyevis hasn’t been heavily promoting the unit.

Although the operating conditions haven’t been shared, we can be reasonably certain that this is intended as a screen for in-store use. The low brightness would preclude its use in a window or other semi-outdoor environment. We have previously heard that the transparent OLED screens from Planar (Planar Shows Off Transparent OLED Variants), which also use a Samsung panel, have very strict warranty terms, with limits on the amount of ambient light that they can be exposed to.
