What They Say
Huawei is reported by Reuters and others to be planning to sell its Honor budget smartphone brand to a consortium for around $15 billion. Members of the consortium include handset distributor Digital China and the government of its home town of Shenzhen, Reuters said. The all-cash sale will include almost all assets including brand, research & development capabilities and supply chain management.
Honor-brand smartphones made up 26% of the 51.7 million handsets Huawei shipped in July-September, according to estimates from Canalys. Honor’s products also include laptops, tablet computers and smart TVs.
What We Think
The Honor brand will likely become a China-only brand, or at least, non-US, if the deal goes through, it seems. (BR)
