What They Say
VentureBeat reports that Epic Games has raised $1 billion to help fund its development of a ‘metaverse’ and the round values the company at $28.7 billion. Among the investors was Sony which put in $200 million. CEO Tim Sweeney said:
“Their investment will help accelerate our work around building connected social experiences in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys, while empowering game developers and creators with Unreal Engine, Epic Online Services, and the Epic Games Store.”
What We Think
It really does feel as though there is significant momentum (or money, at least) going into AR and VR at the moment. Are we getting close to a genuine breakthrough to a mass market? Or is this another false dawn for really widespread adoption? I’ve seen too many false dawns over the last 25 years in this area. (BR)
