What They Say
Eizo has announced two new ColorEdge professional grade monitors (27-inch CG2700X (3840 x 2160) and CG2700S (2560 x 1440)) with integrated calibration and they are covered in its press releases.
A particular feature of the sets is higher than previous levels of contrast at 1450:1 (CG2700X also with 500 cd/m²) and 1600:1 (CG2700S with 400 cd/m²). Although we couldn’t see any reference to it, Prad.de reported, presumably on the basis of discussions with German sources, that the panels are ‘IPS Black’ panels from LG Display.
Other features include a ‘Sync Signal’ feature option that will detect HDR or Rec. 709 content and switch mode automatically.
The monitors are likely to be available in Q3 in Europe and a bit earlier in the USA.
What We Think
Hmmm… We were unable to confirm that these are the IPS Black panels that LG announced at CES, although they are said to have visibly better contrast and lower black levels than previous products. LG quotes the panel contrast at 2,000:1 but Eizo has its own uniformity processing that could limit the black and white levels to ensure that aspect of performance and that would reduce the headline contrast ratio.
Eizo has tended to use Panasonic panels, but that firm is dropping out of panel manufacture. The firm likes to be consistent in its panel choice to ensure that within a range of the colour-critical monitors, the backlight spectrum is consistent, reducing issues of metamerism where a range of different models are being used within an organisation or workflow.
The Sync Signal feature might be useful for some, but most professionals in the creation industry will tend to switch it off, so that they are explicitly controlling their workflow. (BR)
