DVB considers future codec options

What They Say

The DVB (which coordinates the technical activities of broadcasters in Europe) has held a meeting to discuss the future of codecs. The codecs discussed were:

  • AV1 (from the Alliance for Open Media);
  • AVS3 (from the Audio Video Coding Standard Workgroup of China);
  • MPEG-5 EVC (with Samsung, Huawei and Qualcomm as the lead proponents);
  • MPEG-I VVC (from the Joint Video Experts Team of ITU-T and ISO/IEC and promoted by MC-IF); and
  • MPEG LCEVC (which was presented by V-Nova).

What We Think

There are real and tricky decisions to be made about which codecs to use. I’m reminded of the time, around 15 to 20 years ago, when graphics system makers had to make decisions between different RAM architectures. The wrong choice could lead the firms down a dead end alley and at the time I was just grateful that I wasn’t a product manager at the time. This, of course, is where organisations such as DVB can really help by either ‘picking a winner’ and getting broadcasters and equipment suppliers aligned, or by accepting that there are multiple possible options and working on issues of interoperability.
