Direct View LED Up But Impacted by Higher Prices

What They Say

Omdia released some data from its direct view LED market study on sales in Q3 2022 and said that they were up 10.7% on Q2 and 9.8% on 2021 on an area basis. The firm said that rising prices have pushed the fine-pixel pitch displays that customers would like to buy out of reach. The growth of fine pitch was slower at 7.3%.

Weaker sales in China because of Covid lock-downs also impacted the market. China’s entire pixel-pitch product group declined by 6.6% compared to the same period last year, and the decline was worse in the fine-pixel-pitch product family, dropping by 13.5%.

Absen was number one in the fine pixel pitch market globally in 3Q22. Besides Absen, another vendor that drew attention is Sony, which has newly entered the top five by pushing Unilumin to sixth place. Sony succeeded in expanding its sales in Japan with a standard line-up that significantly lowered the price.

What We Think

Cold or cooler winds everywhere, it seems – especially for lower brands. Looking at the data, it’s a bit hard to fathom as the overall market growth was low, but three of the brands basically doubled their market on an annual basis. Working back from those figures, my calculation is that the sales of ‘others’ must have dropped by 41% year on year. I guess if the market in China was particularly bad, that could well have happened although it’s rare to see such a huge drop in ‘Others’ from nearly 49% to 27% in just one year.

This kind of change would be in line with what the firm reported in Q2. I reached out to the analyst Omdia to double check my calculations last time, but got no response, sadly.   (BR)
