DHL has long advocated the use of augmented reality headsets in logistic applications. So far the company has tested smartglasses from Google and Vuzix in its logistics business. An earlier test run in Holland has shown positive results and an increase in picking speed by 25%.
Now the Australian subsidiary of DHL is looking into using AR glasses in its operations as well. The interesting part of this development is that this trial is not aimed at showing what AR glasses can do for logistics operations, but to lower its respective costs of operations as a means to compete with lower labor cost areas.
This is the next step in the deployment of AR glasses. It is not about fancy technology and better performance anymore, but it is coming down to saving money, the best motivator to drive further adoption of AR technology in the market. – NH
