What They Say
Dell has shown the latest version of a modular concept laptop that it is calling Concept Luna. The style is ‘comparable in size to a Latitude with some Dell XPS 13 Plus-like stylings’ according to Ars Technica which got a look and a chance to try dismantling the unit. The blog said that the LCD in the notebook was removed by a Dell spokesperson by ‘inserting a pin into a hole in a keystone south of the screen and then took off the keystone, releasing a latch underneath the piece, and plucked the display off the chassis’.
The blog said that Dell hopes to be able to re-uses parts recovered in machines to build into products it can sell.
What We Think
We’ve reported on other moves in this direction before (Framework Laptop Gets Upgraded Mobo). As Jon said yesterday, the PC is somewhat stalled. If Dell really could sort out a low cost way to disassemble and re-use components, it could open the way much more to rental/HAAS models that would allow markets with more premium products to upgrade more regularly, with the re-built/recovered devices being sold in markets that are more cost sensitive.
