What They Say
DCI which controls Digital Cinema technical and security issues has approved two new LED displays for cinema applications from
- Nanjing Lopu Technology for the LP-Cinema-100
- NanoLumens Inc for its Cine 4K 2.5 Cinema Display
Both use media blocks made by Qube Cinema Inc, the Qube Xi 4K. On it’s website the DCI says:
Note Regarding Direct-View Screens
Having passed the CTP in its current form, DCI has now listed a direct-view screen system as compliant. However, DCI has not performed a comprehensive assessment, similar to original system testing, of the imagery of direct-view systems. DCI is taking steps to add new tests to future versions of the CTP. In the interim, DCI encourages consultation with industry experts to ensure a thorough understanding of the issues and limits, if any, with direct-view systems.
What We Think
Actually, I think it has listed several now, so the website needs an update. I went through the list and as well as Samsung, Sony, Unilumin and LG Electronics which I was aware of, Appotronics (!), Shanghai Muge Technology, Shenzhen Timewaying Technology Co., Ltd also have approved products. Still, the economic case for LED cinema is a tough one, even if the cinema industry wasn’t grappling with issues of the drop in attendances from Covid and competition from home viewing via streaming.
