Creating an 8K Channel “Not That Hard” Says TCL

What They Say

The 8K Association followed up the release by TCL about its 8K channel for its Roku-based Series 6 sets (Links Week Ending 19th November 2021). The organisation got Ben Schwarz to talk to TCL’s Aaron Drew who said that “It was pretty easy to create this 8K streaming service”. The content is delivered using the AV1 codec which is said to take 10X the time to compress compared to HEVC at around 1 hour for each minute of content. That is down from an initial four hours.

The 8K content is currently encoded at 60Mbps at 30fps with the libaom-av1 multi-pass encoder and with static HDR10 metadata.

What We Think

Of course, it’s easier if you partner with someone that already has plenty of 8K content!

The 8KA is having a webinar about the state of 8K live production on Dec 8th. You can register here. (BR)
