Corning Optimises Glass for Waveguides

What They Say

Corning has a new glass formulation that has a refractive index of 2.0 and is intended to be used in waveguides for XR applications (up from 1.8 and 1.9 in previous versions). The glass is said to allow a wider field of view and better light transmission at blue wavelengths. The new material is available in wafer diameters of 150mm, 200mm, and 300mm, in a range of thicknesses and with ‘leading geometric tolerances’.

What We Think

We previously reported that Schott had got its RI up to 1.9. (Schott Glass Reduces Waveguide Weight by 20%) At the time, Schott highlighted the low weight and trickiness of manufacture.

I found an interesting article here by AGC on the benefits of higher refractive indices here. (BR)
