Coretronic Transformation Fails to Save Shipments

Company chair Chang Wei-yi has said that Coretronic is in the midst of a transition from a backlight unit maker to a display solutions provider. The switch is mainly being undertaken to raise production value and gross margins. At an investors’ conference, Chang said that revenues for the company’s projector business did not rise much between 2013 and 2015, but gross margins jumped due to operational transformation.

Coretronic’s BLU shipments fell 16% and DLP projector shipments fell 22% YoY in Q4’15, to 15.1 million and 274,000, respectively. For the year as a whole, the company shipped 71 million BLUs (down 23.5%) and 1.1 million DLP projectors (down 3%).

LCD TVs accounted for 21% of Q4’15 BLU shipments, LCD monitors for 20%, notebooks for 45% and tablets for 10%.
