Compal halts Taiwan production Because of Omicron

What They Say

Nikkei reported that Compal Electronics, a supplier to Dell and Amazon among others and the 2nd largest contract maker of notebooks , is halting production at its factory in Pingzhen in Taoyuan City for a week after three employees tested positive for COVID-19 as the latest wave of the omicron variant spreads in Taiwan. The firm told Digitimes that its overall capacity has not been badly affected.

Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, told Nikkei Asia that it already stepped up its COVID prevention measures in Taoyuan from the first week of January, including suspending the movement of employees between different factories. Quanta has also escalated its precautions.

What We Think

Taiwan has done pretty well in combatting the virus so far, with just under 18,000 cases and 851 deaths since the start. Over 70% of the population have been double vaccinated. (BR)
