Chris Chinnock On 8K Being A Real Thing, And How Pro AV Gets Ready For It

What They Say

Our own Chris Chinnock was on the Sixteen-Nine.net podcast where he talked about the challenges and advantages of 8K for Pro/AV applications. He emphasises the challenges, but also the opportunities for the use of video-over-ip and the creative use of 8K.

What We Think

In the discussion there is a brief mention of 8K in VR. I see this as very important application. Although 8K displays for VR use are still a long way away (but desired) there is a lot of work in developing smart codecs that can deliver viewports on a scene to the headset by companies like TiledMedia (8 articles on Display Daily) and the Fraunhofers. However, those kinds of systems need a lot of resolution in a 360° environment to provide a viewport with reasonable resolution and even 8K is only a ‘next step’ for that.

(I was irritated – I persuaded BT Sport to give me access to its 360 degree service, but in the end all I could get was very time limited access and other plans conspired to not allow me time to investigate!) (BR)
