CES Still Losing Support

What They Say

CES looks less and less appealing as a number of big tech names have dropped out. Amazon, Meta and Twitter have dropped out and the latest we saw withdrawing was Lenovo which usually has a significant presence in the Venetian – hiring one of the restaurants for the whole event (and a popular place around lunch time for analysts and press!)

What We Think

It’s bizarre to look at Expedia at CES time and see hotels offering discounts! One year, three of my staff and I were booked for CES through a ‘business class only’ budget airline that was flying direct to Sin City. The airline went bankrupt just before the holiday and we lost our ticket money and then had to find a way to get there – not easy at that time. But then after something like 70 or so trips to Vegas over the years for Comdex, CES, Infocomm, NAB and, probably, others, I have lots of stories!

I’m not going this year and will miss CES for the first time since 2000, assuming it doesn’t fall apart in the next couple of days and does go ahead. Display Daily team members will be there, though.

In the meantime, ISE says it will go ahead in Barcelona, still. However, with Omicron rapidly spreading in Europe. From the UK, I can’t go to Germany or France at the moment. I haven’t booked a flight, yet and I’m not finding the idea of the show attractive. (BR)
