Multiple trade associations have agreed to use ‘4k UltraHD’ or ‘4k UHD’ as common terminology to describe TVs meeting the CEA’s UltraHD guidelines (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 26). As well as the CEA they include DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group; CEDIA; ATSC; SMPTE; the Home Theater Specialists of America (HTSA); and the NATM Buying Group.
In addition, the CEA has said that its UltraHD logos (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 26) are now available for licensing. TV manufacturers must submit qualifying product models that they wish to display at CES 2015 to the CEA by the 19th December. The logos may be used from the 1st January.

Back when the CEA announced its UltraHD terminology (Display Monitor Vol 19 No 42), we raised objections – primarily regarding future resolutions. Where do you go from UltraHD? Marking sets with 3840 x 2160 as ‘4k UltraHD’ – as Sony has done – may make some sense, I think (although still doesn’t handle the DCI-4K resolution of 4096 x 2160, as Aldo mentioned in his 343 some weeks ago (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 43)).
