What They Say
We’ve been following V-Nova and its Codecs for a number of years now. Just a couple of weeks ago, we missed a release from the firm that said that MPEG-5 LCEVC (LCEVC) codec enhancement (ISO/IEC 23094-2) had been selected by the Brazilian SBTVD Forum for adoption in its next generation broadcast television system.
An initial Call for Proposals (CfP) was issued in July 2020, and LCEVC was proposed jointly by V-Nova and Phase, along with Harmonic Dynamic Resolution Encoding (DRE). Following detailed technical evaluation, the combination of LCEVC with Dynamic Resolution Encoding was the only video enhancement solution selected to be used to improve a VVC encoding for broadcast and broadband delivery or H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC encoding for the internet options.
An independent test lab, appointed by the SBTVD Forum and funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Communications, conducted the technical evaluation phase to evaluate the technologies that could meet the challenging targets for delivery of next generation services in Brazil. In addition to the technical evaluation, market and intellectual property aspects were also considered for the selection.?LCEVC successfully complied with all the requirements of the TV 3.0 CfP.
What We Think
Apologies, we did spot the announcement of the TV 3.0 project in Brazil but not this one. What caught my eye was that the LCEVC enhancement along with VVC can deliver UHD HDR content at <5 Mbps, according to a tweet from Thierry Fautier, a past president of the Ultra HD Forum, That’s impressive (BR)
