What They Say
As expected, following the Bravia announcements at CES, Sony has now announced that its Bravia Core content service has now been included with its 2021 Bravia XR TVs.(Sony Reveals 2021 TV Plans)
The service is a high quality (up to 80 Mbps – the equivalent of Blu-ray) streaming service for content from Sony Pictures Entertainment and from iMax.
Buyers of sets will get credits – for ten movies over two years for high end sets and five credits over one year for mainstream sets.
What We Think
This kind of service could act as a reasonable replacement for optical technology in providing really high end content. Given the continued development of codecs, it should be possible to keep pushing quality levels higher for quite a long time at this kind of bit rate, which is becoming more and more widely available, at least in urban and developed regions.
