DSCC has said that its sources in China have confirmed that BOE plans to commercialise a 95″ WOLED 8K panel shown at the recent Display Week event. Specifications include 800 cd/m² peak luminance (150 cd/m² typical), colour gamut of 99% of DCI-P3 and 120Hz refresh.
The unit shown in San Jose was made on the B5 WOLED R&D line, which is a very low volume line, but that may not be a problem as such a display is likely to be expensive. DSCC said that it had heard that yield is ‘not that bad’.
What We Think
Chris Chinnock of Insight Media/8KA said that he had heard that this panel is not likely to go into production this year as there were no equipment orders identified. However, if BOE did use the R&D line, it could make a few. Brightness of the unit at DW was not that great, but as we have seen with QD-OLED, improvements are often made in coming into production.
Of course, up to now, LG Display has been the only supplier of WOLED large panels. I assume that there would not be a IP barrier as others make WOLEDs in small sizes.
Separately, The Elec reports that Samsung will not launch WOLED TVs based on LG panels this year, but may wait for 2023 models. That’s really not news. If the firm had not already done the deal with LG, it would struggle to get something out this year and even next year might soon start to get tight. The Elec reports that one of the stumbling blocks in a potential deal is that Samsung would want to ‘co-develop’ the WOLEDs and LG may well be very reluctant to do that. (BR)
