BenQ has introduced two new projectors for consumer home theater and entertainment, the GS2 portable outdoor LED smart projector and the TK810 4K smart home theater projector. The GS2, recipient of a Projection Expo 2020 Best of Show Award, is a compact and lightweight portable projector as well-suited for movies on an outdoor camping adventure as it is for a quick temporary setup in a bedroom, den, or dorm room.
Measuring just 5.5 x 5.7 x 5.5 inches (WHD), the cube-like GS2 offers thoughtful features that include wireless connectivity with mobile devices, a built-in Android-based streaming platform, on board Bluetooth that allows it to be used as a portable speaker for a phone or to send movie audio to an outboard Bluetooth speaker, easy setup with auto-focus and auto-keystone, a built-in camera, and a rubber-clad, unibody cabinet that’s drop-proof from 1.6 feet and IPX2-certified splash-proof against light rain or spills.
The GS2’s Osram LED light engine is rated for 500 ANSI lumens of brightness, and the projector is compatible with up to Full HD 1920×1080 programs which it renders at its native 720p resolution via a 0.3-inch DLP chip. The rated lifetime for the light source is 20,000 to 30,000 hours depending on the power setting. The GS2 should be available in July for $599.
A replacement for the TK800, the TK810 smart 4K HDR home theater projector is another extension of BenQ’s budget home theater line-up, utilizing the same chassis and similar features as the successful HT3550 home theater projector intended for dark-room movie viewing, and the brighter TK850 intended for sports and TV binge-watching in moderate ambient light. (You can read our comparison review here.) Like the TK850, the new TK810 is also intended for ambient light viewing with 3,200 ANSI lumens of brightness (vs 3,000 in the TK850), and adds on-board WiFi and a smart Android OS for integrated streaming via the Aptoid store and browser apps, and wireless connectivity with mobile devices. Bluetooth connection to an external speaker or headphones is also a feature. The projector has a microphone-equipped remote for voice searches on YouTube and is also compatible with BenQ’s Smart Control app for use in place of the handheld remote. BenQ’s LumiExpert technology, which uses a sensor to detect ambient light levels and adjust the image accordingly, is also included.
The TK810 offers a slightly longer throw 1.48:1-1.62:1 zoom lens than its sister models, and a single 5-watt speaker vs the stereo pair found in the other two. It uses the 0.47-inch DLP XPR chip to achieve 3840×2160 UHD resolution. Priced at $1,549, the TK810 is available now from leading online retailers.
