Chris Chinnock of the 8K Association reported on a case study by Astrodesign that covered a recent concert in Japan that was filmed in 8K using a single camera, with one additional camera for 4K on the conductor.

Video captured by an 8K camera was segmented into HD cut-outs using Astrodesign’s Tamazone Workstation (AW-8800). For broadcast, 4 perspectives were sent out to viewers with the production team switching over the following 5 perspectives: (i) a bird-eye view of the stage, (ii) 3 segmented images, and (iii) HD camera on the conductor. This is a system that can be operated by one staff member and without the need for a cameraman at the venue.

Viewers could choose from a range of different views.

The Association referenced a new Mosaic solution from TiledMedia.

What We Think

I plan to come back to the Mosaic technology. Chris mentions sport as a key application for this kind of capture. I remember being at an event on stadiums some years ago when the discussion was around setting up stadiums with multiple fixed 8K cameras feeding back video over fibre to centralised production facilities as a way to provide lower cost live sports coverage. One of the complications, and it’s a long way from trivial, is sound. Ideally, you would want the sound to match the viewpoint of the camera and that can prove to be even more difficult than capturing the vision. It has been a significant challenge in trying to cover sports in stereo 3D in the past. (BR)
