BBC Streams UltraHD with HLG

We seem to be a little late to report it, as there are only two matches left, but the BBC has been streaming UltraHD footage of the World Cup and the Wimbledon tennis tournament with HLG support of HDR through its iPlayer app. The connection has needed to be at least 40Mbps, because the sports are being shown at 50fps and the stream is encoded at Main 10 Profile, Level 5.1 HEVC, which is the same as was used for the Blue Planet II trials. As well as the UltraHD stream there were three other streams.

  • 3840x2160p50 36Mbit/s
  • 2560x1440p50 16Mbit/s
  • 1920x1080p50 10Mbit/s
  • 1280x720p50 7Mbit/s

The host broadcaster services did not provide native HLG, so the BBC converted to that format.
