What They Say
Barco posted a video about a new projector, the F400-HR, that is said to be the first single chip DLP projector to support UltraHD without a need for pixel shifting, although it will have that facility (internal and external) to boost resolutions further. The prototype was developed at the end of the year when the plan was to show it at I/ITSEC as it is aimed at the simulation market initially as it can support up to 240Hz operation. The projector can support resolution of 2 – 2.5 arc minutes, needed for high fidelity simulation systems. It can use dual inputs to overlay infrared content over visible images or for stereo imaging.
The projector uses a full solid-state RGB light source so there are no colour wheels. It is said to be ‘speckle free’.
What We Think
Hmmm, I’m a bit conflicted on this. The ‘pixel counter’ in me is happy, but in the end, if you can’t see much difference between pixel shifting and ‘native’ ultraHD, the difference becomes academic. Chris went to side-by-side demoes from Sony several years ago and found that the differences were reasonably small.
